  • Server-based computing

A low-cost, centrally-managed computer devoid of CD-ROM players, diskette drives, and expansion slots.

  • Server-based SSD

A solid state drive that may be manufactured in a PCI Express form factor. It could also be a SATA or SAS drive that plugs into the standard SATA/SAS interface, allowing it to be installed directly into a server.

  • Server-Side Include (SSI)

A variable value that a server can include in an HTML file before it sends it to the requestor.  A Web file that contains server-side include statements is usually defined by the administrator to be a file with an "." suffix.

  • Serverless backup

A method of offloading backup procedures from a server so that the time ordinarily devoted to backup functions can be used to carry out other server tasks.

  • Service Component Architecture (SCA)

A group of specifications intended for the development of applications based on service-oriented architecture (SOA), which defines how computing entities interact to perform work for each other.

  • Service Data Objects (SDO)

The name of a specification designed to streamline the processing of SOA data from diverse sources such as XML documents, relational databases and Web Services. SDO can be used with static or dynamic interfaces.

  • Service Delivery

A service delivery framework (SDF) is a set of principles, standards, policies and constraints used to guide the design, development, deployment, operation and retirement of services delivered by a service provider with a view to offering a consistent service experience to a specific user community in a specific business context. An SDF is the context in which a service provider's capabilities are arranged into services.

  • Service Desk

A communications center that provides a single point of contact (SPOC) between a company and its customers, employees and business partners. The purpose of a service desk is to ensure that users receive appropriate help in a timely manner.

  • Service Integration Maturity Model (SIMM)

A paradigm developed by IBM that defines the extent to which various services are integrated in a service-oriented architecture (SOA). A SIMM can help an organization determine how well-developed its services, policies and governance are.

  • Service Location Protocol (SLP)

A protocol or method of organizing and locating the resources (such as printers, disk drives, databases, e-mail directories, and schedulers) in a network. SLP is intended to give users an easy-to-use interface to a network's resource information.

  • Service Now

ServiceNow is a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider of IT service management (ITSM) software,  founded in 2003 by Fred Luddy.

  • Service Profile Identifier (SPID)

A number assigned by a phone company to a terminal on an Integrated Services Digital Network B-channel. A SPID tells equipment at the phone company's central office about the capabilities of each terminal (computer or phone) on the B-channels.

  • Service Virtualization

In software engineering, service virtualization is a method to emulate the behavior of specific components in heterogeneous component-based applications such as API-driven applications, cloud-based applications and service-oriented architectures. It is used to provide software development and QA/testing teams access to dependent system components that are needed to exercise an application under test (AUT), but are unavailable or difficult-to-access for development and testing purposes. With the behavior of the dependent components "virtualized," testing and development can proceed without accessing the actual live components.

  • Service-Level Agreement (SLA)

A contract between a network service provider and a customer that specifies, usually in measurable terms, what services the network service provider will furnish.

  • Service-Level Management (SLM)

The monitoring and management of the Quality of Service (QoS) of an entity's Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). A SLM enables an organization to be assured with stability, reliability, and performance for the provided IT infrastructure.

  • Service-Oriented Integration (SOI)

A method of integrating computing entities using only service interactions in a service-oriented architecture. SOI addresses problems with integrating legacy and inflexible heterogeneous systems.
