  • Data curation

The management of data throughout its lifecycle, from creation and initial storage to the time when it is archived for posterity or becomes obsolete and is deleted, to ensure that data is reliably retrievable for future research purposes or reuse.

  • Data deduplication

A method of reducing storage needs by eliminating redundant data. Only one unique instance of the data is actually retained on storage media, such as disk or tape. Redundant data is replaced with a pointer to the unique data copy.

  • Data Definition Language (DDL)

A standard for commands that define the different structures in a database. DDL statements create, modify, and remove database objects such as tables, indexes, and users. Common DDL statements are CREATE, ALTER, and DROP.

  • Data dictionary

A collection of descriptions of the data objects or items in a data model for the benefit of programmers and others who need to refer to them.

  • Data Discovery

Data Discovery is a user-driven process of searching for patterns or specific items in a data set. Data Discovery applications use visual tools such as geographical maps, pivot-tables, and heat-maps to make the process of finding patterns or specific items rapid and intuitive. Data Discovery may leverage statistical and data mining.

  • Data dredging/fishing

A data mining practice in which large volumes of data are analyzed seeking any possible relationships between data.

  • Data driven decision making

Data driven decision making is a process of making decisions that can be backed up with verified data. The success of the decision relies upon the quality of data and the effectiveness of its analysis and interpretation.

  • Data Encryption

In cryptography, encryption is the process of encoding messages or information in such a way that only authorized parties can read it. Encryption doesn't prevent hacking but it reduces the likelihood that the hacker will be able to read the data that is encrypted. In an encryption scheme, the message or information, referred to as plaintext, is encrypted using an encryption algorithm, turning it into an unreadable ciphertext.

  • Data Encryption Standard (DES)

A widely-used method of data encryption using a private (secret) key that was judged so difficult to break by the U.S. government that it was restricted for exportation to other countries.

  • Data encryption/decryption IC

A specialized integrated circuit (IC) that can encrypt outgoing data and decrypt incoming data. Some such devices are intended for half-duplex operation, and others are designed for full-duplex operation.

  • Data exfiltration (Data extrusion)

The unauthorized transfer of data from a computer.

  • Data Extraction

Data extraction is the act or process of retrieving data out of (usually unstructured or poorly structured) data sources for further data processing or data storage (data migration).

  • Data federation technology

A software that provides an organization with the ability to aggregate data from disparate sources in a virtual database so it can be used for business intelligence (BI) or other analysis.

  • Data frame

A data frame is an aggregate of numerous, partly overlapping collections of data and metadata that have been derived from massive amounts of network activity such as content production, consumption, and other user behavior. A data frame may be used to drive the creation of new content, applications, or infrastructure enhancements.

  • Data glove

An interactive device, resembling a glove worn on the hand, which facilitates tactile sensing and fine-motion control in robotics and virtual reality . Data gloves are one of several types of electromechanical devices used in haptics applications.

  • Data Governance (DG)

The overall management of the availability, usability, integrity, and security of data employed in an enterprise. A sound governance program includes a governing body or council, a defined set of procedures, and a plan to execute those procedures.
