  • Information Theory

Information theory is a branch of applied mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science involving the quantification of information. Information theory was developed by Claude E. Shannon to find fundamental limits on signal processing operations such as compressing data and on reliably storing and communicating data. Since its inception it has broadened to find applications in many other areas, including statistical inference, natural language processing, cryptography, neurobiology, the evolution and function of molecular codes, model selection in ecology, thermal physics, quantum computing, plagiarism detection and other forms of data analysis.

  • Information-centric security

An approach to information security paradigm that emphasizes the security of the information itself rather than the security of networks, applications, or even simply data.

  • Infrared (IR) wireless

The use of wireless technology in devices or systems that convey data through infrared (IR) radiation.  Infrared is electromagnetic energy at a wavelength or wavelengths somewhat longer than those of red light.

  • Infrastructure

The physical hardware used to interconnect computers and users. It also includes the software used to send, receive, and manage the signals that are transmitted. In some usages, infrastructure refers to interconnecting hardware and software.

  • Infrastructure Management (IM)

The management of essential operation components, such as policies, processes, equipment, data, human resources, and external contacts, for overall effectiveness. IM is sometimes divided into categories of systems, network, and storage management.

  • Infrastructure monitoring

Monitoring of the network infrastructure that provides the detailed metrics about the various hardware components the server is using.

  • Inheritance

In object-oriented programming, inheritance is the concept that when a class of objects is defined, any subclass that is defined can inherit the definitions of one or more general classes.

  • Initial Program Load (IPL)

A mainframe term for the loading of the operating system into the computer's main memory . A mainframe OS (such as OS/390) contains many megabytes of code that is customized by each installation, requiring some time to load the code into the memory.

  • Initialization Vector (IV)

An arbitrary number (employed only once in any session) used with a secret key for data encryption. IV prevents repetition in data encryption, making it more difficult for a hacker using a dictionary attack to find patterns and break a cipher.

  • Ink cartridge

A replaceable component of an inkjet printer that contains the ink (and sometimes the print head itself) that is deposited onto paper during printing.

  • Inkjet printer

A computer peripheral that produces hard copy by spraying ink onto paper. A typical inkjet printer can produce copy with a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch (dpi). Some inkjet printers can make full color hard copies at 600 dpi or more.

  • Inline deduplication

Inline deduplication is the removal of redundancies from data before or as it is being written to a backup device. It reduces the amount of redundant data in an application and the capacity needed for the backup disk targets.

  • InnoDB

The default storage engine for MySQL as of MySQL 5.5.

  • Innovation

Innovation is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments and society.

  • iNotes Web Access

iNotes allows Lotus Domino users to access their Domino-based mail, calendar, schedule, to-do lists, contact lists, and notebooks from any computer, at any location, as long as they have an Internet connection.

  • Instagram

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr.
