  • Network convergence

The efficient coexistence of telephone, video and data communication within a single network. The use of multiple communication modes in a single network offers convenience and flexibility not possible with separate infrastructures.

  • Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)

An open protocol used to control data backup and recovery communications between primary and secondary storage in a heterogeneous network environment.

  • Network Design

Network design provides the network infrastructure which includes network topology (layout how computers will be connected), network protocols (how a computer sends and receives messages) and network architecture (peer to peer / client-server) to ensure that the communication requirements or service meets the needs of the customer.

  • Network Device Management Program (NDMP)

A program that helps a network administrator keep track of moves, additions, and changes (known as MACs) to the hardware infrastructure of a network.

  • Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS)

A Windows specification for how communication protocol programs (such as TCP/IP) and network device driver should communicate with each other.

  • Network encryption (Network layer, or network level encryption)

A network security process that applies crypto services at the network transfer layer. The network transfer layers are layers 3 and 4 of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model.

  • Network Engineer

A network engineer, also known as network architect, is responsible for implementing, maintaining, supporting, developing and, in some cases designing computer networks. Unlike network administrators, who perform day-to-day support, the network engineer focuses on high-level design and planning. Their goal is to ensure the integrity of high availability network infrastructure in order to provide maximum performance for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers.

  • Network File System (NFS)

A client/server application that lets a computer user view, store and update files on a remote computer as though they were on the user's own computer. The user's system needs to have an NFS client and the other computer needs the NFS server.

  • Network forensics

The capture, recording, and analysis of network events in order to discover the source of security attacks or other problem incidents.

  • Network Information Center (NIC) handle

An alphanumeric character sequence that is unique for each entry in the database of all Internet domain name registrants. When a new domain name is registered, a NIC handle is assigned by the registrar to the information about that domain name.

  • Network Information System (NIS)

A network naming and administration system for smaller networks that was developed by Sun Microsystems.

  • Network infrastructure

Network infrastructure refers to the hardware and software resources of an entire network that enable network connectivity, communication, operations and management of an enterprise network.

  • Network Interface Card (NIC)

A computer circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network.

  • Network Interface Unit (NIU)

A device that serves as a common interface for various other devices within a local area network (LAN), or as an interface to allow networked computers to connect to an outside network.

  • Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS)

A method of security management for computers and networks. Anti-threat software is installed only at specific points such as servers that interface between the outside environment and the network segment to be protected.

  • Network Intrusion Protection System (NIPS)

An umbrella term for a combination of hardware and software systems that protect computer networks from unauthorized access and malicious activity.
